Libya Chairs Emergency Meeting of the Arab Group to Coordinate Position on Regional Maritime Security

New York, NY — May 8, 2026

The Arab Group in New York held an emergency consultative meeting to coordinate shared visions and positions regarding recent diplomatic developments and the draft resolution expected to be presented to the Security Council this week.

This came during an emergency meeting of the Arab Group at the level of Permanent Representatives, chaired by H.E. Ambassador Taher El-Sonni, Permanent Representative of the State of Libya, which took place on Friday at the United Nations Headquarters.

During the meeting, the Group listened to a briefing by the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain regarding the upcoming draft resolution to be introduced in the #SecurityCouncil by the United States and Bahrain, with the support of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, concerning the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Deliberations focused on reviewing the details of the draft resolution and exchanging views on it, within the framework of ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure the continuity of the joint Arab coordination mechanism on regional and international issues, particularly those affecting the security of the region.
