Libya Chairs Emergency Arab Group Meeting with the Russian Federation to Discuss Maritime Security

New York, NY — May 18, 2026

In its capacity as Chair of the Arab Group for the month of May, Libya organized an emergency meeting of the Arab Group today, Monday, at the headquarters of its Permanent Mission in New York. The meeting was held at the level of Permanent Representatives under the chairmanship of H.E. Ambassador Taher El-Sonni, Permanent Representative of the State of Libya to the United Nations, with the participation of the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation and Arab Permanent Delegations.

Deliberations focused on the Security Council’s mechanisms for handling rapid developments affecting regional security, alongside the latest updates on ongoing negotiations regarding the proposed draft resolution on maritime security.

This meeting serves as a continuation of the previous consultations convened by the Libyan Mission last week with the People’s Republic of China, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to mobilize international support for Arab positions and regional causes.
